This scenic reserve lies on the summit and against the northern slopes of the Magaliesberg. It is in the area of the Magaliesberg mountains that the first recorded sable in southern Africa was sighted and shot. Located a few kilometres to the south-west of Rustenburg, this 4 257 hectare reserve is on the summit and against the northern slopes of the scenic Magaliesberg.
Its unique feature is an extensive valley basin between two mountain ridges. The reserve accommodates various antelope and carnivore species as well as over 320 bird species. Game can be viewed from vehicles or on one of the self guided hiking trails.
Self Catering Cottage (Minimum 6 persons, maximum 14)
The cottage can accommodate 12 people and is located below the plateau in a valley with the mountains forming a beautiful backdrop. It is fully equipped with bedding included. There is a room with a double bed and en-suite bathroom; rondavel with four single beds and en-suite bathroom; and a rondavel with bunk beds sleeping 6 with en-suite bathroom.
Camp Sites (Maximum 8 people per stand)
There are 22 camp sites which overlook the vlei area running through the reserve. Eleven sites are arranged around each of the two ablution blocks under shady trees. Each stand is equipped with a picnic table and benches, monkey-proof waste drum, and a key-shaped fireplace with a braai grid and place for an open fire. There are no taps at the stands but the ablution blocks have hot and cold water showers and baths (bring own bath plug), flush toilets and wash basins. There is a scullery with sinks and a large electric chest freezer. There are no power points at the stands but one spare power point is available in the scullery for charging camera batteries, cellphones, etc. There is no cellphone reception at the campsites, but there is reception on the plateau. Birds and antelope abound around the campsite areas.
Group Camp (Minimum 20 people and maximum 50 people)
The group camp lies tucked against the base of the mountain and sleeps up to 50 people. It is ideal for large groups. There are huts with beds and mattresses (linen not provided), an ablution block with hot and cold showers and flush toilets, a kitchen and dining area, conference or group tented, and an outdoor boma area.
The Kgaswane Mountain Reserve is situated on the summit and against the northern slopes of the Magaliesberg, a few kilometres south-west of Rustenburg. The Magaliesberg towers 400 metres above the surrounding plains and offers breathtaking views of the town and the Pilanesberg and Waterberg to the north, the Magaliesberg curving eastwards towards the Hartbeespoort Dam, and the plains of the Bushveld to the south and west.
