This picturesque freshwater and bushveld reserve is dominated by the Pongolapoort Dam (also known as Jozini Dam) in one of the oldest designated conservation areas in Africa. Phongolo has a bird list of over 300 species, as well as a range of wildlife species including elephant, white rhino, giraffe, blue wildebeest, kudu, impala, nyala, warthog, waterbuck, suni, common and mountain reedbuck and zebra.  

The massive Pongolapoort Dam has significant populations of hippo and crocodile, and fish species that include the tough-to-fish tiger fish.
The two boat launch sites are situated close to the campsite and wildlife can be viewed by vehicle using the road network.

The exclusive hunting lodge - Nkonkoni Hunting Camp, is located in the Phongolo Controlled Hunting Area and is open to the public from December to February each year.  This camp consists of four large safari tents, each containing two beds, a wardrobe, bedside tables, a gun safe and a small refrigerator.  An en-suite shower, washbasin and toilet ensure complete privacy for visitors.  A thatched brick lounge, dining room and bar gives visitors the enjoyment of a typical bush camp in a traditional African setting. 

The modern, well-equipped kitchen, adjoining the complex has a refrigerator, deep-freeze, stove, cutlery, crockery and all cooking utensils.  A staff member is on duty to service the camp and take care of cleaning and washing up, however please note that there is NO cook.

Phongolo has a scenic campground set at the waters edge on expansive green lawns under a grove of acacia trees with twenty sites, suitable for tents or caravans, which accommodates up to 120 people.

Sites share one coldwater tap for drinking water and there are twenty barbecue facilities. The campsite is not electrified. Guests need to be self-sufficient as there is no firewood or charcoal for sale. The ablution facilities have cold running water, flush toilets, showers and basins. An adjacent picnic site is available for day visitors to enjoy.
